Academic Quiz Bowl

What is Quiz Bowl?
Quiz Bowl is a "Team Jeopardy" type of format whereby teams of four compete against each other. Each team member has a buzzer, and "toss-up" questions over all areas of academia are answered by "buzzing in" the fastest. "Bonus" questions can then be answered by the team that answered the toss-up question correctly. It's a fun, fast-paced, competitive environment that kids really enjoy! Mr. Curtis is the North White High School Academic Quiz Bowl coach.

Highlights of the 2009-10 Season:

It was a another busy and successful 2009-10 season! We again competed in several tournaments this year where the competition was very, very tough and included some very large public schools as well as many private academies. This type of competition only made us a better, stronger team in the long run - even if we had to "take some lumps" along the way. Those tournaments included the Northwestern University Wildcat Invitational in Chicago (along with the usual trip to the best pizza in the world - Giordano's!), the Brownsburg "Dogfight" Invitational (a new one for us this year), and both the Culver Academies Fall Classic and Invitational Tournaments. Also new this year was the first ever Rotary Northern Indiana Quiz Bowl Championship, the first-ever Quiz Bowl Tournament in Indiana that was "classed." We competed in the Small School Division along with 9 other schools, and won our first-ever Tournament Championship! (Click on Link for exciting details!)

At the Indiana Quiz Bowl State Finals on March 13 at Harrison High School in Lafayette, the Vikings showed they belonged by making a good showing, finishing 16th out of 22 teams in the one-class finals. Out of those 22 teams, the Vikings were the only Class 1A school competing, as the field was dominated by 15 Class 4A schools, several private academies, and a few Class 3A schools. As a result, the Vikings had their hands full but to their credit were not in awe of their competitors and did a fine job.

In the first round, the Vikings were jumped on pretty good by a very strong Fishers team who made it to the Final Round of 8, 400-195. North White came back very strong in the second game and defeated Perry Meridian in a close battle all the way, 270-235. In Round 3, the Vikings played tough and hung with Valparaiso for nearly the entire game before falling 290-195. In their final game, the Vikings again showed no fear and fought Avon tooth and nail to the bitter end before succumbing, 280-205. Several other coaches of the big schools complimented North White on their play and how impressed they were with the team even though it was from such a small school, which was a nice consolation prize for the Vikings. In the end, White River Conference champion Zionsville bested Penn for the State Championship.

Highlights of the 2008-09 Season:

It was a very busy and successful 2008-09 season! We competed in several tournaments last year where the competition was very, very tough and included some very large public schools as well as many private academies. This type of competition only made us a better, stronger team in the long run - even if we had to "take some lumps" along the way. Those tournaments included the Northwestern University Wildcat Invitational in Chicago (along with a special trip to the Sears Tower and the best pizza in the world - Giordano's!), the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, and the Culver Academies Invitational.

Back on the home front, North White finished as Runner-up for the second straight year in the Tippecanoe Valley Quiz Bowl Conference Tournament held in two sessions in December and January at Pioneer High School. The Vikings defeated new league member Winamac, Pioneer and county rival Twin Lakes and then lost to Culver Academy in the finals to finish with a 6-1 conference record. By virtue of their 2nd Place finish, the Vikings qualified to participate in the Indiana State Quiz Bowl Championship Tournament at Harrison HS in Lafayette on March 14. The Freshmen/Sophomore Junior Varsity Team ended up winning the JV Conference Title with a perfect 7-0 record. Congratulations Vikings!

The Vikings were also Runner-up at the 6-way "Bring-A-Friend" Invitational Tournament held in November at Pioneer High School. They finished with a 3-1 record in the tournament with Twin Lakes, Logansport, Pioneer, Winamac, and Culver Academy.

Our trip to the State Quiz Bowl State Championship on March 14 was a memorable one. Out of 22 teams there, North White was the ONLY Class A school there. There were no schools from Class 2A, a handful from Class 3A, and the vast majority were Class 4A schools or private schools or academies. As such, we had our hands full! We finished in a tie for 16th at State, and we were very happy with that. We had a 1-3 record on the day, only getting beaten fairly soundly by eventual 4th place finisher New Palestine, 390-170. We defeated LaPorte 265-245, took Indianapolis Broad Ripple to the wire before falling 300-265, and dropped our final match to Mishawaka Marian, 340-180. This finished up our season for the year, and it was a vastly improved one from last year. Our Varsity team ended the year with a very respectable 28-24 record (again considering that a majority of our competition is from much larger schools) and our Junior Varsity finished up with a record of 15-13. I will remember this team and what they accomplished as the one that made North White a team to be reckoned with, and for that I am appreciative and grateful for all their efforts.

Several individuals on the team won All-Conference honors. It was announced in late February that four of our students had been named to the 2008-09 All-Conference Team. Jason Triplett made 1st Team All-Conference and Jim Elliott made the 2nd Team, both in the Varsity Jr/Sr Division. In the JV Frosh/Soph Division, both Justin Rodin and Erin Minnick made 1st Team All-Conference, and Justin Rodin was named Player of the Year by virtue of his conference-leading scoring average (and Erin was 2nd!). We are very, very proud not only of these four students but the entire team for how hard they've worked this year and how well they have represented North White in competitive academics. Team members also include seniors Amber Furrer and Ricky Homan; juniors Allyson Culross, Garrett Steinke, Lydia Hickman, Dustin Shadbolt, Lorna Wilson, and Adam Klapp; sophomores Kain Pearson and Megan Roberts; and freshmen Kalisa Mitchell and Elainna Culross. The Quiz Bowl team manager is senior Sam Vana.

As a crowning achievement, the Varsity Team qualified for the National Tournament in Chicago held on May 30-31, and the community outpouring of financial support made it possible for us to compete. Even though we had to leave our then-graduated seniors at home, the team played their hearts out against unbelievably tough competition from around the country and won two games out of ten. Of course, another trip to Giordano's as well as one to Navy Pier to Bubba Gump's highlighted the trip!

Highlights of the 2007-08 Season:

North White was the runner-up at the 4-way Tippecanoe Valley Quiz Bowl Conference Tournament held in December at Pioneer High School. The Vikings defeated both Pioneer and county rival Twin Lakes and then lost to Culver Academy in the finals. Congratulations Vikings!

The Vikings were also runner-up at the 5-way Invitational Tournament held in January at Pioneer High School. The Vikings finished with a 3-1 record in the tournament with Twin Lakes, Logansport, Pioneer, and Culver Academy. At the conclusion of the tournament, All-Conference awards were presented from the December Conference Tournament - with North White capturing three of these awards! Jason Triplett was named 1st Team All-Conference for Sophomores/Freshmen, Jim Elliott was named 2nd All-Conference for upperclassmen, and Erin Minnick was named Freshman of the Year for leading all freshmen in scoring. Congratulations to these students, we are proud of you!
